Olympic Laurel Awards
The "Olympic Laurel" is one of the most prestigious Polish Olympic Committee's award, beginning from the 1967 when it was established.
The first Gala during which the Olympic Laurel was awarded took place in Warsaw two years later while the 68th IOC Session was organized and the Polish Olympic Committee celebrated the 50th anniversary of its establishment.
The award is granted every 4 years in different fields of creativity and arts. Among the previous and this year’s laureates we can find the representatives of Fine Arts, literates, architects, filmmakers, photographers, musicians, scientists. They were awarded for either the particular work or the overall achievements.
In 1994 when the IOC celebrated its centenary and the Polish Olympic Committee its 75th jubilee, the well-deserved Polish Olympic Movement officials were distinguished with the special diplomas entitled "Honorary Olympic Laurels".
Since its very beginning the Polish Olympic Committee has brought together outstanding representatives of sport, science and culture so as to create the best pillars for the development of the Olympic ideas, values and Olympic education.
This 14th Olympic Laurel edition was celebrated under the Honorary Patronage of the Minister of the Culture and National Heritage.
The welcome speech was delivered by POC President - Mr. Andrzej Kraśnicki.
The awards were granted in 4 categories: Gold Olympic Laurels (among others Mr. Wojciech Zabłocki - architect, Olympic medallist in sabre were distinguished for overall career as an architect), Silver Olympic Laurels (among others Mr. Szymon Sikora who has been accredited as a photographer since Beijing Olympic Games 2008; author of the photo cycle titled "Union of the Colour and Movement"), Special Polish Olympic Committee Awards went among others to Mrs Justyna Szubert-Kotomska, admired tv journalist who is famous and appreciated for very detailed reports devoted to Olympism and sport. She is the author of the document called: "Rio. City without God").
Finally, the honorable mentions went to the authors of the collective works in the field of Olympic and sport literature.
The Olympic Laurels which are in the form of the medal were handed over by Mrs. Irena Szewińska - IOC Member, 1st POC Vice President and POC President Mr. Andrzej Kraśnicki.
The event was well attended with the sounds of the music band "Kings of Gold".
